Commercial and organized groups (including universities, schools, scouts and clubs) must contact the Monticello Field Office for information on additional Special Recreation Permit requirements. No permits or passes are required for car touring and dispersed camping in Bears Ears National Monument. Vehicles and bicycles must stay on open designated roads and visitors must use established campsites and avoid impacting undisturbed areas. From the trailhead, follow the obvious trail north.

Though it can be visited in an hour or two, I would recommend planning on most of the day. The ruins offer lots to see, and I am surprised to discover something I had not seen before on every trip. There are moki steps, ruins, rock art, and even a baby's foot imprint on the mud of one of the more out the way ruins.
Stay to the left of the obvious pour-off and you’ll spot a trail heading up the other side of the canyon. The Moon House is a large cliff dwelling located in the Cedar Mesa area of Bears Ears National Monument. It’s one of the largest cliff dwellings that’s still around in Cedar Mesa. Hiking to Moon House is a rugged experience from start to finish. The road out to Moon House is rough; high-clearance and four-wheel drive are suggested, but the drive can be completed by two-wheel drive vehicles depending on conditions. The trail itself can be challenging for inexperienced hikers. There is a five-foot pouroff halfway to the archeological site which is impassable for some visitors depending on their comfort levels and prior experiences. Second, you’ll need a 4×4 vehicle with high clearance (stock 4Runner was more than fine) to reach the trailhead parking lot. Moon House, a multi-room cliff dwelling named for its celestial pictograph, is an exceptional archaeological site in McCloyd Canyon on Cedar Mesa, Utah. The Bureau of Land Management requires a day use permit to visit Moon House and limits access to 20 people per day. Remember, it is illegal to remove any artifacts or damage sites in any way. Fines or jail time can result for those who break the law. Leave all artifacts where you find them, don't lean on walls or enter interior rooms, avoid touching rock art, and don’t add modern graffiti.
Stay left of a pouroff, and you soon reach a route that ascends the left canyon wall. Climb to the next tier of slickrock, where several cairns lead you higher. The final push involves climbing up a crack to the base of an overhung ledge around 1.7 miles. Reservations on this site are available for non-commercial hiking only.
Directly across from the site, the trail drops down to the bottom of the canyon. After a few broad switchbacks, the trail descends a steep scree slope and spits you onto the canyon floor at 1.6 miles. Ascend the trail, picking your way through a tier of slickrock. You’ll need to climb up a slabby crack to the base of the Moon House before you reach your final destination. You will want to pack out all trash, including human waste. This means bringing a WAG bag for number 2’s.
You can’t ignore what is impossible to repress. From Moonhouse, stay at that level, and follow social trails up the canyon to a small ruin and a kiva. There are more small ruins up the canyon, but many will be stopped by a couple of small dryfalls before then. Grumbling about the permit system aside, I was very surprised to visit Thanksgiving weekend 2014 and not see anyone else the entire day.
